The Pittsburgh District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and its waterways partners are hosting the third annual water safety event known as Lockfest 2019 on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Emsworth.
The event’s goal is to increase river users’ knowledge of its navigation facilities and water safety.
During the events, attendees will be taught how to lock through navigation facilities and watch live locking demonstrations, talk to tow operators and brush up on boating regulations.
For some, locking through the region’s 23 navigation facilities can be intimidating, and operating a boat on area rivers without proper knowledge and education can increase the risk of injury and damage, stated a Corps of Engineers news release.
Pittsburgh District’s 26,000 square miles include portions of western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, eastern Ohio, western Maryland and southwestern New York.
