It smelled like Prantl’s famous cake when I opened the can.

I am one of the lucky ones who scored a can of Torte, a beer inspired by Prantl’s Burnt Almond Torte and brewed by Cleveland-based Platform Beer Co.

The beer is selling out in stores across Western Pennsylvania.

The first thing that struck me about the beer was that it’s a blonde ale.

So many of the dessert beers I’ve tried have been stouts or sours. A blonde ale with this much flavor and fun was a nice change of pace.

The beer was smooth and heavy but not stout heavy. It was a good fit for the early spring day when I tried it.

It’s a beer I would drink two of — assuming I could find two.

I tasted, and smelled, the almonds first and throughout each sip. But it wasn’t overpowering, despite the 500 pounds of toasted almonds Prantl’s owner John Felice of Hempfield trucked to Platform to brew the beer.

The sweetness provided a nice finish.

So often the taste of a dessert beer or a beer based on a dessert comes off as gimmicky or artificial.

Not this one.

The almond and cake flavor of Torte tasted like it was baked into the beer, like it came from a Pittsburgh bakery rather than a Cleveland brewery.

I’m not a beer snob nor would I consider myself a source for sound opinions on this beer over that beer.

But I will say that Platform’s Torte is good, and I will definitely be looking to try it again.
