Six veteran police officers from departments across the region took the Pittsburgh police oath Friday morning, two of whom will begin their second stints with the bureau.
The new officers, considered veterans because they’ve served with other departments prior to joining Pittsburgh police, now move on to weeks of field training.
Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said he relishes when an officer returns to the department.
“We have numerous officers leaving Pittsburgh for more money,” he said. “They may go for more money, but the challenge and what you see here in Pittsburgh is unparalleled. Thank you for coming back.”
Michael Antonace is returning to the department. He said the city’s lack of residency requirement played a role, as he can live closer to his family in Westmoreland County.
“I missed the challenge and type of work,” he said.
For Sean Jozwiak, who returns after time with the Allegheny County police, it was because of a “sense of pride.” His father was a Pittsburgh police officer.
He said he left city police to follow the universal advice of going where he could make the most money. He later decided he didn’t want that to keep him from doing what he enjoyed.
“I’d rather be happy,” Jozwiak said.
Hissrich noted that policing is more difficult now than ever before, and mistakes do happen. He asked for honesty when they do.
“I ask you to be truthful throughout your entire career,” he said. “I’ve seen many careers ended both on the federal side and here in Pittsburgh because officers were not truthful and honest about their mistakes.”
Deputy Chief Thomas Stangrecki told the officers to remember why they’re here.
“Remember that you protect and serve the community,” he said. “When someone calls, they are looking for your help. Treat them with respect. Give them attention. Take action. Do the right thing for the right reasons.”
