Allegheny County coronavirus cases reach 476, triple over past week

The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Allegheny County tripled during the past week as the countywide total climbed to 476 on Friday.

County officials reported 57 new cases Friday, compared to 63 new cases reported Thursday.

The recent jump in cases reflects a significant increase in testing, officials said.

About 500 people have been tested per day during the past week, a significant increase over the 1,614 tests reported to have been performed on Allegheny County residents as of last Thursday, Brink said.

County officials are releasing some demographic information, including a general age breakdown of cases and where people with confirmed cases of covid-19 live, on the Allegheny County covid-19 website.

More demographic information is expected to be released within the next week.

Of the county’s 476 total cases, the City of Pittsburgh continues to report the most cases, with 175, according to a heat map showing cases throughout the county last updated by officials Friday.

That map does not include a breakdown of cases by city neighborhood or ZIP code.

Among other municipalities, the map showed McCandless had at least 19 cases, and Richland and Mt. Lebanon each reported 12.

More than 62,000 people across Pennsylvania have been tested for covid-19, according to figures released Thursday by the state health department.

Of that total, 8,420 people have tested positive and 102 people, including the two in Allegheny County, have died from complications from covid-19.

While at least 41% of infections statewide are occurring in people between the ages of 25 and 49, the most hospitalizations — at least 50% — are occurring among people over the age of 65.

Cases in Allegheny County match those trends.

Most of the county’s 78 hospitalizations have been among older adults, officials said.

Information about how many of those patients have recovered and have been discharged has not been released.

The cases are split about evenly between genders: 241 women and 235 men.
