Two people were sent to the hospital after a fire early Thursday at a Wilkinsburg apartment building.

Pittsburgh Public Safety Information Officer Alicia George said Wood Towers was evacuated at about 5:30 a.m. after fire broke out in an apartent on the seventh floor.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire and EMS responded to the incident along Wood Street. The fire was quickly located and contained to the apartment, George said.

One resident went to the hospital in stable condition with minor burns and smoke inhalation. A second resident was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

George said Port Authority buses arrived to provide shelter for residents, along with the Salvation Army, which provided assistance at the scene.

The building houses senior citizens and physically challenged people. There are about 100 residents in the nine-story building, George said.

Residents were allowed to return to their apartments at about 7:45 a.m.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal will continue the investigation.
