Authorities are “real close to a conclusion” in a case involving a Whitehall woman who is presumed dead after she went missing April 30, Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. said Tuesday.
“We have not found her body but that doesn’t preclude us from prosecuting,” Zappala said during an unrelated news conference.
Elizabeth Wiesenfeld, 67, was reported missing by her daughter after she didn’t show up for work. In the months since then, investigators say they have developed “a tight timeline” about what may have happened to her.
“We’ve discussed it with the family,” Zappala said. “They’re looking for closure. Hopefully we can accomplish that.”
They’ve named Douglas Berry, 47, of McKeesport as their chief suspect. Wiesenfeld had previously hired Berry as a handyman, her family has said.
Investigators say they searched Berry’s home and two vehicles and found a 9mm pistol during those searches. A convicted felon, Berry is prohibited from owning a gun. He’s been held in Allegheny County Jail on that firearms violation since May 2.
