A former West Penn Hospital employee spied on co-workers in the bathroom by using a small video camera he taped to a chair and then downloaded the recordings to his personal laptop, the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office alleges in charges filed Friday.

The camera footage led to the arrest of Guy Caley, 52, who police said was caught on his own camera as he taped it to the side of a chair.

An employee discovered the camera in December while using the unisex bathroom on the hospital’s third floor, according to the criminal complaint. The employee told police the bathroom is accessible only by employees, who need to type in a code to get in.

The employee told police they immediately kicked over the chair on which the camera was taped and consulted a co-worker as to whether they believed the device was a hidden camera, according to the complaint.

Highmark Police downloaded the camera’s footage and discovered five victims had been surreptitiously recorded, according to the complaint. Police concluded the camera had been positioned so that it would catch people in stages of undress.

In a January interview with investigators, Caley told them he had placed the camera in the bathroom the morning it was found, according to the complaint. He also said he had set up the camera several times before and downloaded the recordings.

Caley, of Canonsburg, said he deleted previous videos from his laptop after he learned his camera had been discovered, according to the complaint.

Police said Caley told them he was “curious” about what his camera would capture in the bathroom. He is charged with multiple counts of invasion of privacy and illegally recording people.

The District Attorney’s Office said there could be additional victims. Anyone who thinks they might have been victimized by Caley can call the office at 412-388-5300.
