Bill Fuller grew up in a single-parent home, reliant on school lunches and food stamps.

He knows how tough it is to be insecure about food.

That’s why Fuller, president and corporate chef of Big Burrito Restaurant Group, is intent on helping those in similar situations.

“There definitely were a lot of days [growing up] where the food was lean,” Fuller said. “I feel like now that I am successful professionally, one of the most important things is for me to try and give back, and one of the most fundamental rights as a human is you should be able to eat food.”

Fuller joined the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank’s Brian Gulish to discuss his initiatives in this week’s food podcast.

A member of the food bank’s board of directors, Fuller also said one of his goals in ending hunger is to do it in a healthy manner.

The food bank says it distributed more than 10 million pounds of healthy produce last year as part of a new wellness policy.

“Keeping the nutrient value up and the healthy freshness of food up is great for people,” Fuller said. “Just because you may be poor doesn’t mean you don’t want to be healthy.”
