Brain Adams of the Westmoreland County Food Bank unloads pallets from the truck as volunteers work to unload food and set up a monthly food pantry Dec. 5, 2017, at Mother of Sorrows Church in Murrysville.

Greater Pittsburgh Community Food bank serves 11 counties in southwestern Pennsylvania.

All but Westmoreland County.

Given the size of the area the Westmoreland County Food Bank covers, the organization separated from Greater Pittsburgh in 2000.

“Our area of the region is about the size of Delaware, so it made sense for us to be a standalone food bank,” said Jennifer Miller, CEO of Westmoreland County Food Bank.

Miller joined Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank’s Brian Gulish on this week’s food podcast to discuss how the organizations combat food insecurity throughout the region.

The Greater Pittsburgh and Westmoreland food banks have combined to distribute more than 41 million meals in 2019, Gulish says.

Westmoreland food bank distributed 5.6 million meals itself. The food bank serves about 7,000 — or about 18,000 people — each month.
