Former KDKA-TV chief meteorologist Jeff Verszyla now has a new freelance gig at WTAE-TV .

Former KDKA-TV chief meteorologist Jeff Verszyla returns to Pittsburgh television with a new freelance weather gig.

He announced Thursday on social media that he will begin working with WTAE-TV starting Sunday. He said he expects to be on mostly weekend nights into early August.

He asked fans not to “call it a comeback,” referencing a LL Cool J song, when he’s back on the airwaves on Father’s Day for the 6:30 and 11 p.m. broadcasts.

“It’s special,” Verszyla said of the opportunity. “It will be fun to get back on the air in Western Pennsylvania.”

He said he’s excited to work in the same studio and weather center as the late Pittsburgh weather legend Joe DeNardo.

Verszyla even joked about being rusty for being off TV broadcasting for about a year and a half.

“I’ve got to get my bearings again people,” he said.

After being laid off by KDKA in December 2018 after 23 years of service, Verszyla developed an online following with his Facebook segments called “Whiteboard Weather.”

He pledged to continue those efforts while doing the freelance work.

There is an opening on WTAE’s weather team with the departure of Alex Alecci, who recently took a job at NBC affiliate WESH in Orlando, Fla.
