A special memorial ceremony for submarine veterans will be held Sunday aboard a Cold War-era submarine moored along the Ohio River at The Carnegie Science Center.
The free, public event aboard the USS Requin will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Submarine veterans of USS VI Requin Base will toll a bell once in memory of each submarine lost at sea and will cast flower petals on the water in honor of the submarines and lives lost at sea, according to the science center. A 21-gun salute will be performed by the Marine Color Guard from Three Rivers Leatherneck Detachment 310 and the VFW Post 9199 Honor Guard.
After the service, visitors are invited to tour Requin, which will have free admission all day.
The USS Requin was inducted into the Submarine Hall of Fame on May 21, 2017, according to the science center.
The Hall of Fame recognizes post-WWII submarines that made significant contributions to submarine tactics and technology, the science center said. Requin was nominated for her use as the first Radar Picket submarine and service protecting the East Coast during the Cold War.
