Pittsburgh residents can pick up free mulch from the city’s Christmas Tree Recycling Program beginning Saturday.

Residents can pick up the mulch from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the city’s forestry division, 6520 Stanton Ave., on Saturdays through April 20 or while supplies last.

Residents are required to bring their own buckets, gloves and shovels.

The city turned more than 21 tons of Christmas trees into mulch this year with the help of the Department of Public Works Environmental Services bureau, the city’s forestry division and local Girl Scout troops.

Officials say pine mulch can be used for vegetable gardens, blueberries, strawberry patches, tomatoes and eradicating weeds.
