Trib Total Media has partnered with Pittsburgh police and local nonprofit Global Links to offer free, cloth masks across the city.

More than 10,000 free masks are available to the public at Pittsburgh police stations through the “Need a Mask, Take a Mask” initiative.

The masks are located in newspaper boxes, some donated by Trib Total Media, at all six zone stations and two substations. The coin operation systems in the boxes have been deactivated so anyone who needs a mask can take one for free.

“We are pleased to partner with the police to offer such an important service to our friends and neighbors,” Trib Total Media President and CEO Jennifer Bertetto said. “During these trying times, we are actively seeking ways to support our communities and ensure that everyone remains safe and healthy.”

State officials last month asked people to wear a mask while out in public. By April 15, Gov. Tom Wolf ordered all customers and employees at businesses across the state to wear a mask while inside. Businesses were directed to deny entry to anyone not wearing a mask.

“I’ve seen more and more people not wearing masks while out in the public,” Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert said in a video posted to Pittsburgh police social media accounts announcing the initiative. “I think it’s critically important for all of us to do our part, because it’s not about me, it’s not about you, it’s about all of us. And it’s about all of us looking out for the health and safety for everyone else.”

About 1,500 masks also will be distributed with grab-and-go lunches at City of Pittsburgh Department of Parks and Recreation senior and recreation centers.

Mask pick-up locations include:

  • Zone 1 Police Station: 1501 Brighton Road.
  • Northview Heights Police Substation, during operating hours: 441 Mt. Pleasant Road.
  • Zone 2 Police Station: 2000 Centre Ave.
  • Downtown Substation, during operating hours: 604 Liberty Ave.
  • Zone 3 Police Station: 830 East Warrington Ave.
  • Zone 4 Police Station: 5858 Northumberland St.
  • Zone 5 Police Station: 1401 Washington Blvd.
  • Zone 6 Police Station: 312 South Main St.
