Free street parking ending in Downtown Pittsburgh as businesses reopen
People who park in Downtown Pittsburgh will have to pay up at meters again.
City officials announced that enforcement will restart on Wednesday.
City and Pittsburgh Parking Authority officials hadn’t been enforcing metered parking since mid-March because of the shutdown spurred by the coronavirus pandemic. But now that Allegheny County is in the yellow phase of Gov. Tom Wolf’s reopening plan, enforcement will return as businesses that were closed begin to reopen.
The first 30 minutes of parking will temporarily be free to allow for customer pickups, the city said. But people must still enter their information in the parking kiosks or use the smartphone application. Free sessions are limited to one a day.
Warnings of violations will start to be issued Monday in advance of plans to start ticketing on Wednesday.
The parking authority’s Downtown garages are open for those who need longer-term parking.
Enforcement of metered and permit parking in other city neighborhoods remains suspended, the city said.
The moves comes after city police last week started ticketing and towing people who were parked illegally Downtown.
