People will have one last chance to ride decades-old Port Authority buses as the transit agency honors their retirement by restoring a long-gone Pittsburgh route this weekend.

The final two Neoplan USA buses left in Port Authority’s fleet will go out of service after this weekend.

Neoplan USA buses have been part of Port Authority’s fleet since 1982, one year after PennDOT purchased more than 1,000 buses and distributed them to transit agencies across the state.

Officials said several models of these buses have been the workhorses of Port Authority’s system and a familiar sight for two generations of transit riders.

The two remaining buses will make their final rides Saturday and Sunday along the old Downtown route of the 96A-Golden Triangle. The route has not been run for more than 30 years and will be resurrected for the weekend.

The buses will depart every 45 minutes between 9 a.m. and 8:15 p.m. from the East Busway’s Penn Station Stop C in Downtown, off Liberty Avenue. They will make a loop as they serve 13 stops in Downtown. No fare will be charged.

Riders can identify the buses by their 96A-Golden Triangle head signs.
