A Pittsburgh man who has led police on a multitude of car chases recently is in Allegheny County Jail after sheriff’s deputies made a concerted effort to arrest him while he wasn’t behind the wheel, authorities said.

Chief Deputy Kevin Kraus said 19-year-old Michael Stuvaints was wanted for fleeing Stowe police and had nine other outstanding warrants ranging from aggravated assault to fleeing police.

Stuvaints, of McKees Rocks, has led authorities on “numerous vehicle pursuits involving various police departments” across the county and he was considered a danger to the community, Kraus said.

Kraus said Stuvaints’s penchant for starting police pursuits led the police departments searching for him to ask the sheriff’s office for help.

Deputies planned to find Stuvaints and arrest him while he wasn’t driving, Kraus said. They found him asleep at a relative’s home in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood with a semiautomatic pistol and 13 ounces of marijuana next to him, police said. In his car, Kraus said, they found 382 stamp bags of suspected heroin.

Stuvaints now faces new charges related to drug and firearm possession. He was arrested without incident.
