The Market District in Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood will be offering reserved curbside pickup time slots for health care workers in the area, Giant Eagle announced Wednesday.

“We are extremely aware of and grateful for the sacrifices health care workers make every day in order to provide much-needed care for our communities,” said Giant Eagle spokeswoman Jannah Jablonowski. “Providing easy access to essential nourishment through our curbside pickup service is just one small way we can thank them for their efforts.”

The service is available to health care workers at Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn Hospital and these UPMC hospitals: Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Magee-Womens Hospital, Mercy, Montefiore, Presbyterian, Shadyside and Western Psychiatric Hospital, according to a news release from Giant Eagle.

Workers at these hospitals will be able to place their grocery orders online for next-day pickup. UPMC and AHN will provide the information to eligible employees.

The extended pickup hours will be 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily. They won’t impact the curbside service for other Giant Eagle customers, who can still order groceries for pickup from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“We are so thankful to Giant Eagle and the many others who have also stepped up in their own unique ways to support our courageous caregivers, and their families, at this challenging time,” AHN President and CEO Cynthia Hundorfean said in a statement.

One of the leaders of UPMC’s Physician Thrive program, which looks out for the well-being of the doctors there, said she was also grateful.

“On behalf of UPMC and our health care teams, who are working tirelessly to provide lifesaving care to our community, we extend our sincerest thanks to Giant Eagle for this notable act of kindness and their partnership on this initiative,” Dr. Jennifer Berliner said in a statement.

She is one the leaders of the Thrive program.

“We know that an effort like this will go a long way toward addressing the unique stress our health care employees are under right now. Anything we can do to simplify the lives of our employees during this public health emergency will make such a huge difference,” Berliner said.

Giant Eagle’s GetGo locations are also offering a free cup of coffee or fountain beverage to any health care worker who visits in uniform or shows a valid badge with their Advantage Card.
