Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf expanded on Pittsburgh City Council’s proclamation that Oct. 27 be designated “Remember Repair Together Day” by declaring it a statewide day and ordering state flags to be flown at half-staff that day.
The proclamation honors the 11 congregants killed in the shooting at Tree of Life synagogue one year after the attack. The gunman opened fire on the Shabbat services of three congregations – Tree of Life-Or L’Simcha, Dor Hadash and New Light.
“A year has passed, but I continue to carry sorror for the victims and their families of the heinous attack,” Wolf said. “We must honor them by remembering, and through our thoughts, prayers and actions. I ask all Pennsylvanians to spend Oct. 27 doing the same in their honor.”
“Remember. Repair. Together” is the theme of the one-year commemoration planned by the congregations. The day will include community service opportunities and a 5 p.m. memorial service at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland.
Wolf ordered the state flag to be flown at half-staff at all state and public buildings from sunrise to sunset. He invited residents to do the same.
“Pittsburgh is a city of bridges,” Wolf said. “So it is a fitting tribute to commemorate this occasion with a day of building bridges of understanding, welcome and friendship.”
