Penn Hills man killed in motorcycle wreck on Homestead Grays Bridge
Investigators believe a motorcyclist was speeding before he crashed and was killed Tuesday on the Homestead Grays Bridge, according to Allegheny County police.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office identified the victim as Gary Lamont Butler Jr., 41, of Penn Hills.
The incident happened at 12:24 a.m. Tuesday and involved a motorcycle and two cars, Lt. Ken Ruckel said.
No other injuries were reported.
The crash occurred inside an active construction zone near the ramps leading to The Waterfront. Homicide detectives and the county police reconstruction team responded to the scene.
Traffic in that area was limited to one lane in each direction in the eastbound lanes. Both westbound lanes are closed for road work.
Police said the motorcycle was traveling east at a high rate of speed when it struck the back of a Volkswagen. The motorcyclist vaulted over the car, landed in front of the Volkswagen and was struck, according to police.
The motorcycle slid into the path of a Mazda traveling west, police said.
The Homestead Grays Bridge reopened just before 5:30 a.m. after being closed about five hours during the investigation.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the county police tipline at 1-833-255-8477 or reach officers on social media.
