A Homewood man was convicted Friday of shooting and robbing an 18-year-old Braddock woman in 2017 after she got off a Port Authority bus in Homewood.
The woman got off a bus at the North Homewood stop on the East Busway, walked down steps to the street and was followed by Jawan Johnson, 23, who allegedly yelled “give me what you got” at her, pulled a gun from a backpack and shot her in the back, according to police.
She dropped a purse with $400 in it and a bus pass, police said. Johnson took it and ran away, according to the criminal complaint. The woman ran for help and collapsed in the 500 block of North Homewood.
She was taken to UPMC Presbyterian hospital.
She was able to identify Johnson from surveillance video taken before the crime was committed. A photo from the video was shared publicly to identify him, according to the complaint.
Johnson told police he was the man in the photo, but he said he didn’t shoot the woman.
Another person witnessed the shooting and robbery and picked Johnson’s photo out of an array, according to the complaint.
A jury found Johnson guilty of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and robbery in Allegheny County Judge Randal Todd’s court.
Johnson’s court-appointed attorney, Frankie C. Walker, didn’t return a message seeking comment.
The judge will sentence Johnson May 18.
