As millions work from home during the covid-19 crisis, officials say cybercrimes are on the rise.
“Zoom bombing,” in which unauthorized intruders attack private Zoom calls, have been increasing. Jewish communities, schools and online events have been particularly hard-hit by hate groups, who are targeting them with anti-Semitic propaganda.
On Thursday, the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh is helping to lead a national “Cyber-Threat, Fraud & Crime Webinar.” The webinar will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. on Zoom.
Topics will include how to report cybercrimes and fraud, and the steps to take to recover lost funds. The webinar will be lead by Shawn Brokos, director of Jewish community security for the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. Brokos joined the federation in January after a 24-year career at the FBI. She will be joined in the webinar by FBI supervisor Mike McKeown, an expert in cybercrime based in the Pittsburgh office.
The Secure Communities Network (SCN) initiative, a project of Jewish Federations of North America, asked Brokos to bring this project to a national audience.
“Our Jewish community security program worked with the FBI to identify some simple, important steps that all organizations can take to prevent cyberfraud and cybercrime,” said Adam Hertzman of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. “We are so pleased to share this critical information nation-wide.”
