Police: Man shot in Wilkinsburg died of bullet wound to head

A 49-year-old man has died after getting shot in the head Tuesday morning during a suspected robbery attempt in Wilkinsburg, poice said.

The man, whom police did immediately identify, died in a hospital at 5:50 p.m., Allegheny County Police Sgt. Veneranda Costa said. Police had initially said the man was in critical condition.

Officials determined that the man died of the gunshot wound to the head, Costa said.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released its official report.

Wilkinsburg police and paramedics responded to the shooting in the 1800 block of Laketon Road around 4:50 a.m.

The motive for the shooting appeared to be a robbery, police said.

No suspects were in custody as of Tuesday night.

Homicide detectives are investigating.
