Man detained after shooting near Wilkinsburg school, victim in critical condition
A 26-year-old man was taken to the hospital in critical condition Tuesday afternoon after he was shot near an elementary school in Wilkinsburg, according to Allegheny County Police.
Police said they detained a 29-year-old man who they believe was responsible for the shooting. They did not identify him.
The shooting was reported just before 12:15 p.m. in the area of Kelly Elementary School at 400 Kelly Ave.
When first responders arrived, they found a man who had been shot. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.
Kelly Hanna, a spokeswoman for the Wilkinsburg School District, said the only people at the school Tuesday were custodians, and they were unharmed.
She said the school building is locked all day, and people can only get inside by being let in by someone already inside or by using a keycard.
“We are thankful that this was an isolated incident and that no students or faculty were in the building,” Hanna said.
“We did have our custodians onsite, and they were safe in the building,” Hanna said. “Our thoughts are with the victim and families.”
Anyone with information concerning the shooting is asked to call the County Police Tip Line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.
