A man was in critical condition after being struck by a car Wednesday afternoon while walking near Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood.

Pittsburgh and university police responded to the crash near Fifth and Morewood avenues about 3:15 p. m., Pittsburgh public safety spokesman Maurice Matthews II said.

Medics took the man to UPMC Presbyterian hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Police did not identify the man.

A stretch of Fifth Avenue between Devonshire Street and Amberson Avenue remained closed for more than two hours, snarling traffic in the area.

The driver remained at the site of the crash and is cooperating with police, Matthews said. Police continue to investigate.
