A Pittsburgh man was injured Wednesday while trying to escape from Allegheny County sheriff’s deputies, officials said.
Andre Lowery, 27, of Pittsburgh, was being transferred from Allegheny County Treatment Alternative in Uptown to the Allegheny County Jail after getting into a fight at the center Tuesday night, according to deputies. When deputies said they arrived to take him to the jail Wednesday morning, Lowery ran out a door and jumped over a railing.
He fell about 35 feet to the ground and suffered a severe leg injury.
Lowery told authorities he fled because he didn’t want to go back to jail, deputies said. He was taken by ambulance to UPMC Mercy hospital for treatment.
Deputies said they intend to file an escape charge against Lowery. Nothing had been filed Thursday morning.
Allegheny County Treatment Alternative provides inpatient drug and alcohol treatment and other services in a 50-bed facility for nonviolent male offenders.
Deputies said Lowery was serving a sentence there in connection with a 2018 case in which he pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of a vehicle.
