A Pittsburgh man has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with a knife attack at the Wood Street transit station Downtown late Tuesday night.

Shortly before 11 p.m. a Port Authority of Allegheny County police officer was flagged down at the station for a report of a knife attack, according to spokesman Adam Brandolph.

Police said the victim suffered a knife slash to the head and was treated at the scene before being transported to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Uptown. No information was available about his condition.

Calvin Moore, 61, was taken into custody and charged with the knife attack. He faces a Sept. 9 preliminary hearing before Judge Kim Berkeley Clark.

Moore told police that a man “came up to him and asked where his belongings were,” according to a criminal complaint filed in support of the charge.

Moore said the man asked him if he wanted to fight. Moore said he told the man no. The man then became “irate” and tried to punch Moore in the chest, according to the complaint.

Moore said he responded by pulling out a knife he was carrying and “slashed him in the head.”

Police said the man was “very uncooperative” when officers attempted to interview him at the scene and again at the hospital.

Authorities said they plan to review security video to learn more about what transpired during the incident.

The alleged attack is the latest in a spate of criminal activity that has raised concerns about public safety Downtown.

The most recent incidents include:

• A 61-year-old Erie woman who was fatally stabbed near a bus stop on Sixth Avenue on Aug. 8.

• A 33-year-old Carnegie man who was stabbed in the arm and lower back Aug. 13 in Market Square.

• An Alabama man who was charged with stabbing a woman Aug. 23 in Triangle Park along Market Street.
