A man was in critical condition Monday night after being stabbed earlier in the day on a commercial section of Federal Street in Pittsburgh’s North Side, officials said.

Zone 1 police and medics responded to a report of a man injured by a knife shortly after 4 p.m., Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety spokesman Chris Togneri said.

On a sidewalk outside a business along Federal Street, first responders found a man with a stab wound to his abdomen, Togneri said.

The stabbing happened close to where Federal Street meets North Avenue — an often bustling corridor nearby bus stops, several restaurants, a pawn shop and a beer distributor. Federal Street runs beside residential and commercial spaces to the north and Allegheny Commons Park and Pittsburgh K-8 school to the south, with Allegheny General Hospital a couple blocks to the east.

Medics took the victim, whom police did not identify, to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. The extent of his injuries were unclear.

Police continue to investigate.

Officials asked anyone with information about the incident to call 412-323-7800. Tips can remain anonymous.
