A man wanted on a felony warrant in Florida was taken into custody after a three-hour police standoff that began Saturday night on Pittsburgh’s North Side.
The incident began about 10:30 p.m. when Pittsburgh officers spotted a stolen vehicle parked outside a residence in the 3200 block of Lecky Avenue, in the city’s Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood.
When they approached the home, the suspect, who is in his early 60s, began threatening officers from a window, police said. The man forced the homeowner outside, barricaded himself inside and was seen holding a handgun in a second-floor window, according to police.
A SWAT team was called in to secure the area and negotiate with the suspect, but he refused to surrender.
After more than two hours of sporadic verbal exchanges, followed by the team’s deployment of flash bang grenades and gas canisters, the man finally surrendered shortly before 1:30 a.m. Sunday, police said.
He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for observation. Once he is medically cleared, he will be taken to the Allegheny County Jail in Pittsburgh to await extradition, police said.
Authorities have not released the man’s identity but noted he may face additional charges of receiving stolen property in Pennsylvania.
