The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man fatally shot while trying to rob a jitney driver on April 3.

Vernon Lee Owens III, 33, of McKeesport was identified as the man killed.

Allegheny County Police previously said they do not plan to charge the 73-year-old jitney driver.

County police said the driver had picked up a man and another passenger in Duquesne.

While on the road, the passenger, identified as Owens, pulled a gun and struck the driver while demanding money from him, police said.

Police said the driver and the man got out of the car. The jitney driver pulled out his own gun and shot Owens. The other passenger fled.

Police said they got the call for the shooting around 3:50 p.m. along Poplar Street. The wounded man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives determined that the jitney driver legally owned the gun and he had a valid concealed carry permit for it.
