A library isn’t just a physical building with books.

Patrons are connecting with libraries during the coronavirus pandemic through eBooks, virtual story times, job help and other online resources.

Donations are being accepted today for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh through Library Giving Day.

The library needs financial help to add to its book collections, digital capabilities and other special programming.

The annual fundraising event, taking place across the country and in Canada, runs through midnight. As of 1 p.m., $20,000 was raised, said Suzanne Thinnes, manager of communications for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. “That is fantastic,” she said. “We are so grateful for library supporters.”

Thimmes described the various library services available while the physical locations are closed. People can email or call as well as chat with a librarian. There is also an online book club. “We are trying to engage as many people as we can while we are closed,” she said.

Once the libraries reopen, Thinnes expects an even higher demand. People will be looking for jobs and wanting help with updating a resume.

“When the economy isn’t doing well, libraries tend to be busier,” she said. “We believe people will need us more than ever and our staff will be there to assist them.”

There are 19 Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh locations, including two that are under construction Downtown and Mt. Washington.
