Coffee in a bowl?

The owners of a soon-to-open coffee shop in Morningside can explain.

Mullika Reanroo and Sujitra Taimmoungpan, co-owners of Ka-Fair Coffee & Cakery, say the bowl lets people better experience the brew.

“Drinking from the bowl allows you to breathe in the aroma of the coffee beans before you take one sip,” Reanroo told the Tribune-Review on Friday. “We use the best coffee beans and serve it black so you can really taste the rich flavor.

She said you can add cream and sugar if you’d like.

The beans come from Commonplace Coffee in East Liberty. Guests will soon be able to take a coffee break once the place officially opens. Reanroo and Taimmoungpan are awaiting final approval from the Allegheny County Health Department.

They hope to receive word soon. In the meantime, they plan to host an open house from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The two 30-year-old friends met at Burapha University in Thailand. Ka-Fair means coffee in Thai.

Taimmoungpan came to the U.S. six years ago to attend Community College of Allegheny County and the University of Pittsburgh. She called Reanroo, a professional baker in Thailand, about opening a coffee shop. Reanroo moved to town. They both live in Regent Square.

In addition to coffee, tea and hot chocolate, they will serve homemade baked goods made by Reanroo such as a crepe cake with raspberry topping, orange cakes, and brownies.

She taught cake decorating in Thailand and plans to offer classes here and host other events.

Reanroo said undertaking this venture is exciting.

“I am all about the details,” she said. “We like challenges. It’s a new chapter in our lives.”

They chose this area because there isn’t a coffee shop and also it’s a friendly neighborhood.

“The people here are so nice,” said Taimmoungpan. “This is such a good opportunity for us. Pittsburgh is such a cool city. And it is a place where we can do our dream here.”

There is WiFi and comfortable couches and other seating for lounging and enjoying some java. They have a community board for posts about what’s happening in the area.

“I love coffee,” Taimmoungpan said. “We want to be the center for the community. Pittsburgh has been such a welcoming city, and you can find what you want to do here in Pittsburgh.”

Ka-Fair Coffee & Cakery is located at 1806 Chislett St., Morningside.

Hours will be 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Sunday. They plan to stay open later on Fridays and host live music
