New Year's Eve weather could prove tricky in Pittsburgh region

As if being out on New Year’s Eve doesn’t present enough challenges, the weather may make it a bit more difficult for revelers to get around the Pittsburgh area.

Temperatures at or below freezing along with snow showers and gusty winds will require folks heading Downtown for First Night Festivities to prepare accordingly.

“It’s going to be a little bit on the blustery side,” said meteorologist Lee Hendricks from National Weather Service office in Moon.

So, while the temperature will be in the low-30s, a 15 mph wind will make it feel like it’s in the upper teens. Some gusts could reach 25 mph, he said.

“Any prolonged time outside could get a little unpleasant,” said Hendricks. “With those winds, I would recommend dressing in layers with some kind of head cover as well. Dress for the weather not the style.”

As for driving, Hendricks said to be ready for possible slippery conditions in certain areas.

“We have a 50 percent chance for snow showers late this afternoon and overnight,” he said. “Whatever is out there during the day may melt and as temperatures start falling and the snow hits it as well, it may cause some icy patches on bridges and overpasses.”

Hendricks said visibility should be okay but that drivers should exercise caution.
