A 53-year-old man was killed in a crash between an SUV and a tractor-trailer on Route 19 in Marshall Township early Friday morning, according to the Northern Regional Police Department.

The tractor-trailer was carrying bulk mail.

The SUV went under the mail truck, and the driver of the SUV was killed, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the mail truck was uninjured.

Police reported the tractor-trailer was pulling out around Perry Highway and Thorn Hill Road when a Mercury Mountaineer SUV driving from the opposite direction collided with it around 1 a.m.

A United States Postal Service spokeswoman confirmed the trailer was owned by the postal service, but said the driver was third-party contractor.

Perry Highway was closed until just after 5 a.m.

Police are investigating.
