Froggy’s, once a legendary bar in Downtown Pittsburgh, is looking to get hopping again in Bloomfield.

Five owners bought the former Pollock’s Cafe building on Liberty Avenue with a goal of re-creating the lively place on Market Street where drinks flowed and large crowds congregated.

“Froggy’s was known as a legendary bar for young professionals to go to, especially in the summer when they could have a few drinks on the rooftop,” said co-owner Tanner Fitzgerald of Shadyside, who also works as a small business lender. “When the owner passed away, the bar closed, because it wasn’t the same without him. We want to create a new generation of Froggy customers, who can come here for a fun social atmosphere.”

Fitzgerald, Michael Brennan, Jim Mermigas, Mike Flaherty and Steve Bowser bought the Liberty Avenue establishment in June.

The original Froggy’s, owned by the late Steve “Froggy” Morris, closed in 2003. Morris died in 2008.

The new location includes a full bar with 12 craft brews on tap. Food is available from nearby Pizza Italia until Froggy’s kitchen is ready. Items include appetizers such as french fries, mozzarella sticks and pepperoni rolls. The bar also features white, Sicilian and specialty pizza options and Italian, steak, buffalo chicken, chicken Parmesan and veggie hoagies.

Some of the furnishings remain from Pollock’s including a 20-plus-seat bar from the 1950s and the decorative ceiling created in the 1930s, which was previously covered.

The owners plan to add booths and additional seating as well as spruce up a patio, which has heat lamps for outdoor dining and drinking. The front doors open to create an outdoorlike feeling, which is perfect for block parties and the neighborhood’s annual Little Italy Days.

Karaoke is available Friday nights.

There are five high-definition big screen televisions.

“Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield has always been a great strip filled with some of the best businesses from restaurants to bars to shops,” Fitzgerald says. “We wanted to be a part of the tradition of this area.”

The bar will offer 25 percent discounts to medical staff on Thursdays, given several nearby hospitals such as UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, UPMC Shadyside and West Penn Hospital.

“This is the No. 1 bar in Bloomfield,” said Angelo Corsaro, of Bloomfield, who was having a drink with his wife Philomena. “We loved the bars at this location it the past, and we welcome Froggy’s to the neighborhood.”

Hours are 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
