Penn Hills Elementary School closed early Wednesday afternoon due to a water main break along Jefferson Road.
Superintendent Nancy Hines said the school lost water service sometime before noon, but the students were able to have lunch.
The district posted an alert about the incident on its website, phsd.k12.pa.us, and parents were notified.
Hines said some parents picked up their children at the school. The rest of the students and some staffers were bused by Krise Transportation to the high school around 1 p.m.
She said students at dismissal got on their regular buses and were taken to their regular stops.
The high school had some extra space that afternoon because seniors were already dismissed due to graduation practice.
A group of elementary employees stayed behind in case other parents showed up after the students were moved.
“It was pretty smooth and I was really proud of everybody,” Hines said.
Classes are expected to resume Thursday morning depending on water service restoration.
Friday is the last day of classes at Penn Hills this school year.
