A Penn Hills woman was “hanging around” a train yard Wednesday night with her boyfriend when one car began to move, running over her leg, police said.

The 18-year-old woman, whom officials declined to identify, is recovering from her injuries at a local hospital.

“She was down around the tracks with her boyfriend,” said Penn Hills Police Chief Howard Burton, adding he believes alcohol to have been involved.

“They were walking around, hanging around, talking and swinging around the train cars. Being kids. All of a sudden, the train started to move, she slipped and fell and the train rolled over her leg,” Burton said.

Burton said her leg was still attached when first responders found her on the 1900 block of Leechburg Road around 8 p.m. but did not know the extent of her injuries.

EMS Director Diane Fitzhenry did not know the woman’s medical status but “it was a severe leg injury,” she said. “There were also bystanders that made a tourniquet to control the bleeding.”

The woman’s boyfriend, 19, is also from Penn Hills, officials said.

Burton said the department does not have jurisdiction over the train yard, which is owned and operated by U.S. Steel.

Meghan Cox, a spokeswoman for U.S. Steel, confirmed the woman, who she referred to as a “trespasser,” was severely injured after being struck by a moving train.

“The individual is currently being treated at a local hospital and we continue to work with authorities in their investigation,” she said, declining to offer additional details.
