Construction crews were working on a "cap" over I-579, also known as the Crosstown Expressway, in Downtown Pittsburgh on Jan. 29, 2020.

Lane and shoulder restrictions on I-579 in Pittsburgh will begin Monday night as part of the construction of a “cap” over the highway linking Downtown to the Lower Hill District, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reported on Friday.

Drivers should expect restrictions in both directions, but not simultaneously, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays through April 17, according to PennDOT. Crews will be working on concrete in the area between the Webster Avenue and Bedford Avenue bridges.

The work is necessary as part of the $29 million cap project that will link the two city neighborhoods and include a three-acre park with pathways for pedestrians and bicycles, landscaping and art installations.

PennDOT has advised motorists to expect traffic delays and restrictions during the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2022.
