A Pittsburgh police officer was wounded early Sunday morning in one of several shootings over the weekend that police are investigating.

Officer Calvin Hall, 36, was shot early Sunday morning while he was off-duty and visiting friends in the city’s Homewood neighborhood. He was initially in critical condition at an undisclosed Pittsburgh hospital.

“As of now the family wishes to keep everything private and so until such time he is welcoming visitors, I am not going to comment on the condition itself,” Mayor Bill Peduto said.

Family members and police are at the hospital, Peduto said.

“Police are there and there’s a person who’s been assigned to help him and help the family with everything they need, but at this time it’s a private matter,” the mayor said.

He said the weekend was bloody and seems to be following an annual trend of an uptick in violence during warm weather.

“There’s a spike of violence in the summer, and then a leveling off and then it subsides during the winter. [But] this weekend was a rough weekend,” Peduto said. “Each of the situations are different. I believe two of the incidents were domestic. Without getting into details about specific cases, it seems as if the incidents themselves were targeted incidents where the people knew each other.

The shooting was one of three that city police are investigating. Allegheny County police are also investigating four other shootings from the weekend.

Officer Hall, the victim in the Homewood shooting, is a two-year veteran of the force and was assigned to the Northview Heights Public Safety Center, a job he was hand-picked for. Prior to joining the city police force, he was an officer in Braddock.

Former Braddock Mayor John Fetterman, who is now Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor, said Hall worked part time in 2015 and 2016 for Braddock. Fetterman said he was sorry to see him leave the Braddock force, but also happy that Hall was able to get a full-time job for Pittsburgh.

“He was a really good officer. Obviously, it’s really awful what happened,” Fetterman said.

The other shootings include one in the Northview Heights neighborhood that Hall patrolled when he was on-duty.

Two people were hurt in a shooting early Sunday morning in that neighborhood and police found a woman shot multiple times in the lower body in the 800 block of Mt. Pleasant Road. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition. A man wounded in the shooting fled the scene but later returned to seek medical attention. He was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital and was listed in stable condition, police said.

Another shooting was reported at 9:15 p.m. Saturday at Nova Place, formerly Allegheny Center, on the North Side.

In that incident, police found a man with a gunshot wound who had collapsed in an outside stairwell. The man was attending a music concert inside Nova Place when a fight broke out. Police are seeking potential witnesses from the crowd.

Allegheny County police are also investigating three shootings from the weekend, including one involving a Penn Hills police officer who was investigating a homicide Sunday night there.

A Pittsburgh man was killed Saturday night in McKeesport, according to police, and a man was shot in the foot Sunday night in South Park.
