The Pittsburgh Symphony announced Friday morning it is postponing concerts scheduled for the next two weekends, including this weekend’s BNY Mellon Grand Classics concerts, in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra CEO Melia Tourangeau had said the symphony was going ahead with this weekend’s scheduled performances of Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Brahms’ Symphony No. 1.

But now, not only are this weekend’s concerts postponed, but next weekend’s PNC Pops “Bugs Bunny at the Symphony” concerts are postponed as well. So far, no makeup dates have been announced.

The symphony also announced that it is cancelling the EQT Student Side-by-Side concert March 18 and the new subscriber/new donor evening reception on March 24.

These actions will have a significant financial impact on the orchestra, according to Tourangeau.

“We are grateful for the deep generosity of our community and ask that, whenever possible, you consider ticket exchanges or donating your tickets for a tax refund,” Tourangeau said in a statement.

“As a nonprofit arts organization, the Pittsburgh Symphony relies on the audience we serve. By donating your tickets in lieu of a refund, you are providing vital support for the music and musicians that inspire and connect our community.”
