Point Park University is looking for gamers to join its new esports team.
The team is recruiting players with plans to compete in the 2020-21 school year.
Point Park University’s Pioneer’s Athletic Department will oversee the esports program, which will be treated as the 18th varsity sports team on campus. Athletic scholarships are available for players.
“The next logical step for the University is adding an esports team to our varsity sports programs,” Point Park Director of Athletics John Ashaolu said in a statement. “We continue to try to find new ways to engage our students, and tapping into the growing popularity of esports is bound to create excitement among both current and prospective students.”
The university will be affiliated with the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE), a governing body that works similarly to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
NACE member schools compete in many different video games, including shooters like Fortnite, sports games like Madden, and action strategy games like League of Legends.
Point Park University in May partnered with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Pittsburgh Knights esports team to host a gaming tournament with hundreds of contestants.
The university’s Rowland School of Business offers a class on the business of esports.
Point Park University isn’t the first local university to start an esports team. Robert Morris University’s team started competing this year.
