Police: $3,300 in heroin, more than $7,000 in cash found inside Hazelwood house

Allegheny County police arrested a Derek Phillips of Hazelwood Feb. 14, 2020 after narcotics detectives executed a search warrant at his Hazelwood home and discovered heroin, a stolen handgun and more than $7,000 in cash inside.

Allegheny County narcotics detectives arrested a Hazelwood man early Friday morning after finding heroin, a stolen gun and pot when they executed a search warrant at his home.

Detectives from the Allegheny County Police Narcotics Unit searched a home in the 4700 block of Monongahela Street after obtaining the warrant as part of an investigation focused on heroin trafficking in the county, according police.

Detectives seized 550 stamp bags of heroin and fentanyl with a street value of $3,300 as well as a stolen 9mm pistol that was under a bed pillow of the man who was arrested. He also had $7,221 in cash and a small amount of marijuana.

Derrick Yuron Phillips, 37, was taken into custody and charged with drug-related charges, receiving stolen property and illegal possession of a handgun. Phillips is not permitted to own a handgun because he has two prior felony drug arrests, police said.

He is in the Allegheny County Jail awaiting a preliminary arraignment on the charges.
