A 72-year-old Hill District man who at first appeared to have died from natural causes was shot, Pittsburgh police said.

According to police, officers went to an apartment building in the 2100 block of Centre Avenue on Friday morning after being called to do a welfare check on a resident.

Officers found the man dead on the floor inside his apartment.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Sam Gantt.

Police said that while it initially appeared that Gantt died of natural causes, further investigation determined he had been shot one or more times in the upper body.

Police said they were continuing to investigate.
