Pittsburgh has hired security guards and assigned employees to work evening shifts at a maintenance facility in Squirrel Hill that was burglarized several weeks ago on three separate occasions, a city official said.

Department of Public Works Director Mike Gable said about $10,000 worth of equipment, including lawn mowers, weed whackers and leaf blowers, was stolen during the thefts that happened three weeks ago. Suspects broke into large storage containers at the maintenance division for Schenley Park near the Squirrel Hill Tunnels.

Pittsburgh police are investigating.

“We made changes to correct that problem,” Gable said. “We’ve since parked vehicles in front of the containers so you can’t get the doors open. I have staff working light duty down there until 10 p.m. and the security guards are there overnight.”

He said the city intends to set up surveillance cameras at the fenced-in site. Gable said the thieves either scaled the fence or cut a hole in it and cut off storage container locks.
