A man stabbed himself in Pittsburgh’s Market Square Thursday afternoon, then initially told medics that someone else had done it, officials said.

Pittsburgh police officers and medics responded to a report of a stabbing in the 20 block of Market Square at about 2:20 p.m., Public Safety spokesman Maurice Matthews said.

The injured man allegedly told first responders that he was stabbed by another person.

“Upon further investigation, police learned that the stabbing was self-inflicted,” Matthews said. He did not provide any details.

The man was taken by ambulance to UPMC Mercy hospital, where he was in stable condition, according to Matthews.

Police continue to investigate.
