A Jefferson Hills police officer was involved in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning that caused drivers of both vehicles to be transported by medical helicopters for treatment at a Pittsburgh hospital, officials said.

Police responded to the 200 block of Old Clairton Road in Jefferson Hills around 8:15 a.m. for reports of a rollover crash. A preliminary investigation shows the police officer was driving northbound on the road, and the other vehicle southbound. Officials said the head-on crash occurred in the northbound lane.

The crash resulted in both drivers, who were the only ones in their vehicles, to become trapped in the wreckage. Both were freed and treated on scene before being transported.

The condition of the drivers, who were not identified, was not immediately available.

Because the crash involved a police officer, the South Hill Area Council of Governments crash reconstruction team will investigate.

“Jefferson Hills officers are rallying behind their injured officer and offering their thoughts and prayers to him and his family,” a release from the department reads.
