Moon Area High School adds police presence after BB gun found on 1st day
Additional police officers will patrol the Moon Area High School campus this week after authorities confiscated a BB gun from a young man on Monday evening, according to school officials.
The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. when a school security guard stopped two men near the high school because one of them was carrying what appeared to be a partially concealed handgun, said district spokeswoman Nina Pompeani.
The security officer alerted Moon Township police, who determined the weapon was a BB gun, according to a letter sent home to parents to inform them about the incident.
“The district remains safe and the incident was contained,” the letter states.
The two men were taken into custody, but no information was available this morning from police about their identity or whether charges will be filed.
The letter to parents also included a warning that “any student associates with a weapon of any kind on campus or at any school-affiliated event will be punished to the maximum extent.”
Pompeani on Tuesday said the warning is for anybody who brings a weapon onto school property.
“The letter mentions students because that’s the audience it was directed at,” she said. “But nobody is permitted on school property with a weapon.”
