A man shot through the ceiling of a house during a four-hour standoff Wednesday in White Oak, authorities said.

Officers responded about 4 a.m. to a home on State Street where a 20-year-old man allegedly barricaded himself on the second floor with a gun, according to a statement from White Oak police.

As officers walked into the first floor of the house, they “immediately heard a gunshot from the upstairs,” police said.

The man, who police did not identify, told them he shot through the ceiling and also shot himself in the upper arm just before they arrived, authorities said.

White Oak officers began negotiating with the man. County SWAT officers also responded.

By 8 a.m., the man agreed to put down the gun and seek treatment, police said.

Authorities said they do not expect to file charges.
