North Versailles police are warning residents about a black bear spotted in their community.

Police said residents in the Green Valley area should be especially alert because the bear was seen there.

Police said the bear was last seen entering the wooded area behind the fire department and the Pennsylvania Game Commission has been notified.

Residents are advised to not leave any food outdoors because it could attract the bear.

They also poked a little fun at the situation saying, “Residents, also please stop leaving porridge in your unlocked cars overnight.”

This isn’t the first bear to be spotted across the region this spring. Bears have been seen in Kittanning and Franklin Park, and two bears were hit by cars in West Deer and Hampton.

The game commission has previously said it gets most nuisance bear complaints from April through June. By mid-summer, most bear issues have gone away as there’s lot of natural food in the woods. Bears are omnivores that will prey on new-born deer fawns and eat road kill, berries, grains, grasses, honey and more.
