Port Authority sets rider limits on buses, light rail
The Port Authority of Allegheny County will limit the number of riders allowed on buses at one time starting Monday in an effort to maintain social-distancing guidelines and slow the spread of the coronavirus.
• No more than 10 riders will be allowed on a 35-foot bus
• No more than 15 riders on a 40-foot bus
• No more than 25 riders on a 60-foot articulated bus or light-rail car
Once a vehicle reaches its max limit, drivers will not pick up new passengers until others get off, according to a release. If standby buses are available, they will be sent to pick up the riders who were passed.
“We know that all of these recent changes haven’t been easy or convenient — we’ve been asking a lot from our riders,” Port Authority CEO Katharine Kelleman said. “But these restrictions will help our community get through this so we can get back to serving you normally as soon as possible.”
Kelleman encouraged those who don’t have to be on a bus or the T to stay home.
“There are a lot of essential workers keeping our region going right now and it’s important that they have a seat,” she said. “Please stay off transit unless you’re heading to or from an essential job, or you’re traveling to the grocery store or pharmacy.”
Riders are encouraged to wear masks when using public transportation and directions for making homemade masks are on the Department of Health website.
