Prantl's dessert inspires Burnt Almond Torte beer
Almond. Torte. Beer.
Yes, you read that correctly.
Prantl’s Bakery’s famous burnt almond torte dessert is now a drink — the Burnt Almond Torte blonde ale. Prantl’s teamed with Cleveland-based Platform Beer Co. on this brew.
“A lot of other companies have worked with Platform to make dessert-inspired sours,” Valerie Train, director of marketing for Prantl’s told the Tribune-Review on Monday. “And many of those have been successful.”
She will be in Cleveland on Friday for an official tasting of the beer, which is open to the public.
“There have been people telling me they don’t like beer but will be curious to taste this one,” Train said. “It is amazing how much interest this has created. The feedback has been so positive. But I think people love the burnt almond torte.”

She said the original plan was to make one batch, but the brewery may create another one for its opening in Pittsburgh.
It will be sold at various retailers and craft beer stores in Pittsburgh, Ohio and parts of West Virginia as well as some Giant Eagle locations in Pittsburgh and Ohio beginning April 15. It will be available at three brewery locations in Ohio on Friday.
A four-pack of 16-ounce cans in Pennsylvania will cost $15.99.
Matt Subel, vice president of sales at Platform Beer Co., said the company kept hearing about the torte when they were looking to open a space in Pittsburgh. When they connected with Prantl’s, he said, bakery owner John Felice of Hempfield drove 500 pounds of freshly toasted almonds to Cleveland to brew the beer.
“Our objective is to achieve both a flavor aroma and texture combination,” Subel said. “We want people to drink a beer that tastes like the dessert and smells like it.”
Platform plans to open a location at the Bloomfield-Garfield border in Pittsburgh.
